Pancakes and Jesus

As we were sitting down for what we thought would be a simple dinner of pancakes last night, Dylan asks,

"Mommy, why did Jesus have to die?"

Hmmm.... ok, not quite expecting that conversation over dinner, but we can handle it.

My husband and I go through a concise and 4 year old friendly description of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. We explained why Jesus died and how he was Resurrected. After we finished there was a moment of silence and then Liam bursts out,

"JESUS IS DEAD???"

We then explained in a much shorter and 2 year old friendly description of what happened to Jesus.

Another moment of silence....

Then....

Dylan: "How can Jesus still be alive if he is dead??"

Another explanation including how Jesus died so all of our spirits can go back to Heaven.

A moment of silence....

Liam: "Maybe Jesus can come to my house?"

Laughter

Mommy: "Maybe, Liam .... we will keep a light on for him"

Those unexpected gospel teaching moments are absolutely the BEST! I am so thankful that my grandchildren have such wonderful examples to lead and guide them. What a great response for Liam... We would all be so much for the better if we all "kept a light on" for Jesus!

Looks like we both had interesting conversations last night at the dinner table! I would have much rather had the same conversation that you had with your boys over the one that I had to have with my girls!

The words out of children are so amazing. So innocent, yet always so truthful. As your mom said, "they have wonderful examples to lead and guide them." Heidi I am so proud that you and Trent are setting the foundation of the Gospel in your home. I truly felt the spirit as I read your blog. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.

This is so sweet. The moments where our children put us on the spot are so exciting, yet so nerve-racking. They really soak it all up, don't they! Sounds like you gave him all the answers he needed for the time being. I'm sure there are more to come... :)

I think this is the sweetest story I've heard in a long time!! Enjoy this time and it's so good to write them down so you don't forget them. Later these boys will love to hear these stories I think! Great job Mom. How long til you aren't the only girl in the house?
